Dancers tie the knot during Oahu sunset
By Mary Ann Cook
VOLUNTEERS HONORED: Two Saratogans, Anne Campbell and Lou de Give, were honored for their longtime volunteer services to Saratoga during National Volunteer Appreciation Week in late April, and were given official commendations by the city council.
Campbell has served as a volunteer for the city weekly for the past 17 years, ever since she was widowed. She credits this work with giving her life new meaning after the death of her husband. Campbell has helped out in a wide variety of departments, with a multitude of different assignments through the years.
She has been assistant to the mayor, secretary for the emergency preparedness program, records clerk in the inspection/building department, receptionist at the community center and assistant to both the volunteer coordinator and the human resource office.
Colleagues call Campbell conscientious, hard-working and dedicated, working side by side with staff into the night, if need be, at whatever job she's assigned. She has been a significant force in the growth and expansion of the volunteer program.
Beyond her services to the city, she volunteers at her church, the senior center and is active in her WAVE group.
De Give's service to the city has been primarily in the area of safety. As president and treasurer of the Saratoga Amateur Radio Association, he has helped install and maintain the city's radio equipment, as well as playing a critical part in the Saratoga Emergency Response Plan.
He has participated in disaster drills for the city, county and the schools. De Give has participated in special events, such as Celebrate Saratoga!, the Hometown Fourth and the Halloween Caper. And his work has helped prevent vandalism in schools, churches and the library. The commendation cites his loyal and irreplaceable services to the city.
YSI BENEFIT: Teen-age jazz sensation Taylor Eigsti will perform on May 12, at 3 p.m. at the Philips Sunnyvale Amphitheater. Eigsti, piano, is 16. The other members of the Taylor Eigsti Trio are Jason Lewis, drums, and John Shifflett, bass. The concert benefits the Youth Science Institute's Nature and Science Center extension at Vasona Park.
Eigsti has composed more than 80 original compositions in classical jazz, blues, bebop and hip-hop. His career started when he opened for David Benoit, at age 8, by Benoit's invitation. Eigsti played with Dave Brubeck last year at Montalvo.
Concert tickets are $36 general, $50 reserved seating. For more information, call Megan Jellinek at YSI, 408.356.4945, ext. 15. The amphitheater is located at 1000 W. Maude, Sunnyvale.
MEMORIAL DAY: George Cooper, winery manager at Cooper-Garrod Estate Vineyards and P47 Thunderbolt pilot during WW II, will be the principle speaker at Saratoga's traditional Memorial Day Services at Madronia Cemetery. Marilyn White is chairwoman of the event.
First on the agenda is the placing of a wreath at Memorial Arch at the Highway 9 juncture, at 9:30 a.m. Then a march up Oak Street led by the Saratoga High School Band. The Madronia ceremony begins at 10 a.m.
Saratoga Scouts, 4-H clubs, the LDS youth and Children of the American Revolution will make laurel wreaths and place them--and flags--on the graves of some 660 veterans buried at Madronia.
Cooper flew in the European theater during the war, including D-Day. After the war he was a research test pilot at NASA/Ames and became chief of flight safety operations.
MATH WHIZZES: Anderthan Hsieh and Darren Yin of Redwood Middle School and Jeffrey Huang of Fisher in Los Gatos were members of the Santa Clara Valley Team All-Stars that scored highest in the state in the Northern California Mathcounts contest. The coach was Jeffrey Diehl of Redwood.
Anderthan Hsieh came in 10th place individually, and won second place in the Countdown Round. The contest is sponsored by the California Society of Professional Engineers for middle school students. Some 29 schools and 26 all-star teams competed.
Only the top four individuals statewide progress to the nationals, so for the all-star team this was a last hurrah--this year. Last year Tiankai Liu of Saratoga and Harker School, was first in the state and second nationally.
BALLET FUNDRAISER: "Renaissance in Venice," the gala fundraiser for Ballet San Jose Silicon Valley, grossed more than $200,000. The live auction raised $73,500, the silent auction, $20,174. Kathy Tuttle of Los Gatos was co-chairwoman.
In other ballet news, principal dancer Karen Gabay eloped with Josman Pena, brother of BSJSV dancer Maydee Pena. No one knew of the wedding plans, not even the groom's sister. The couple were married on the island of Oahu on the shore of Diamond Head Beach at sunset.
Quite a surprise for the company when the bride showed up at rehearsals after winter break with wedding photos in hand.
