    Foothill draft EIR is available to public

    A draft environmental impact report for the proposed expansion of Foothill School is available to the public at the Saratoga Union School district office and the district website at www.susd.k12.ca.us.

    A 45-day public review period for the draft EIR opened on March 30, and will close on May 15. Written comments on the draft EIR should be sent to the District office at 20460 Forest Hills Drive, Saratoga, CA 95070, during the comment period.

    The SUSD will hold a public meeting to receive comments on the draft EIR on May 9, at 7:30 p.m. a the district office.

    SHS drama department offers play, coffee house

    The Saratoga High School drama department presents an independent student production of Women and Wallace, a one-act play by Jonathan Marc Sherman.

    Show times are May 24, at 8 p.m. and May 26, at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. in the SHS Little Theater. For tickets and more information visit www.angelfire.com/indie/wallace, or call 408.867.3411, ext. 382.

    The drama department is also hosting a coffeehouse on May 3, at 7 p.m. in the Little Theater. The public is welcome to enjoy coffee, tea, cocoa and dessert while watching SHS's best actors, singers, instrumentalists, comedians and storytellers perform. Admission is $3 for students and $5 for adults and includes all food and drink.

    SHS grad awarded Regent's Scholarship at university

    Ankur Luthra, SHS's 1999 valedictorian, has been awarded a Regent's Scholarship at UC-Berkeley where he is studying electrical engineering and computer science.

    Regent scholarships are awarded to first-year students who achieve a 4.00 GPA while taking at least 13 units.

    Silicon Valley Scholars offer scholarships

    Silicon Valley Scholars is offering $20,000 college scholarships to study engineering, math and science. The scholarship also provides a support network, exploration of career opportunities with a mentor, workshops, seminars on college financial planning and visits to Silicon Valley companies and laboratories.

    Applicants must be public high school sophomores in the top ten percent of their class who are five-year Santa Clara County residents and whose families earn $125,000 per year or less. The deadline to apply is May 26. Applications may be found at local high school career centers, or by calling 650.324.1390.

    Youth Science Institute hosts annual insect fair

    The Youth Science Institute of Los Gatos is hosting its annual Insect Fair on May 20, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Sanborn County Park. The event will have a display of arthropods and crafts and activities for children.

    Admission is free to YSI members. Admission for adults is $3 and for children under 12 years of age admission is $1. There is a $4 vehicle fee to enter Sanborn County Park. Call 867.6940 or 356.4945.

    Instrumental Music Dept. selling fundraiser tickets

    The SHS Instrumental Music Department will have its annual fundraiser at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga on August 4. Buffet dinner starts at 6 p.m. and the Manhattan Transfer concert begins at 8 p.m. in the outdoor amphitheater. Tickets are $125 and must be ordered by May 5.

    Profits from the event will be used to finance trips to concerts and competitions, to buy new uniforms, instruments and equipment, and to hire guest artists, conductors and assistant teachers. Call 408.867.3411 ext. 398.
