Six high-school athletes win Wedemeyer scholarships
By Dick Sparrer
Charlie Wedemeyer has spent most of his adult life helping young people as a football coach, an advisor and a role model.
So it should come as little surprise to find that the Charlie Wedemeyer Family Outreach program will present awards this spring--to deserving young people.
The second annual Charlie Wedemeyer Scholarship Awards Dinner will be held on May 17 at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose, and six deserving athletes will receive $5,000 scholarships.
Winning awards will be Kristine Goulart of San Jose Academy, Girmay Guangul of Santa Clara, Ernesto Ramirez of Mitty, Toni Spasaro of Santa Teresa, Josh Visperas of Gunderson and Nancy Vo of Prospect.
All of the winning athletes have overcome some sort of adversity in life, and all have given to their communities.
Local sports celebrities expected for the awards ceremony include Ronnie Lott, Brent Jones, Peggy Fleming and Chuck Muncie. All money raised from the dinner will support Charlie Wedemeyer Family Outreach, which reaches out to individuals and families coping with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease).
