Ricketts ready to run at league track finals

    By Dick Sparrer

All year long, the Anne Ricketts has dominated in the distance events for the Saratoga girls track team. And she'll try again this week when the best of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League converges on the Los Gatos High School track for the annual running of the league finals.

Ricketts, who boasts the best time of the year in the league in the 1,600 meters at 10:56.55, will be the favorite in the event at the league meet, and she'll also run with the leaders in the 3,200 meters.

Hurdlers Taylor Teerlink and Laura Birenbaum are other Saratoga girls expected to finish in the medals at the league meet.

The Saratoga boys are expected to finish strong in the 800 meters with Alex Daniels, Joe Carter and Alex Shoor all top competitors in the event.

Sprinter Josh Glasser and weightman Eric Gianella are other top prospects for the Saratoga varsity.

Richard La (800), David Cheng (hurdles) and Jim Cummins (discus) are top young competitors for the Falcons.

    Swimmers win

The Saratoga boys and girls swimming teams swamped Mountain View by nearly identical scores to push their league records to 6-0 in the El Camino Division of the SCVAL.

The Saratoga boys knocked off the Spartans 113-66, and girls rolled to a 114-67 win over Mountain View.

Senior Jordan Jones breezed to a pair of individual wins and was a member of two winning relay teams to help the Falcons to the easy win in the boys meet.

Jones took the 500-yard freestyle in 5:33.80 and the 200 free in 2:01.31. He teamed with Omar Malik, Howard Yang and Schuyler Lovoi for a first in the 200 free relay in 1:39.96, and he combined with Malik, David La and Richard La for a win in the 400 free relay in 3:50.99.

    D. La was another double winner for the Falcons, taking the 100 butterfly in 1:00.00 and the 100 backstroke in 1:05.61. R. La took the 200 individual medley in 2:15.72.

The Saratoga girls had a similar day against the Spartans with Cecilia Dotzler leading the charge.

The junior star was first in both the 200 free in 2:03.17 and the 500 free in 5:30.62. Dotzler combined with Joanna Ilnicka, Courtney Crase and Sarah Oberhauser for a win in the 200 free relay in 1:53.93.

Oberhauser was first in the 100 fly in 1:08.74, and Jennifer Cheung won the 200 IM in 2:23.75. The two teamed with Alyssia Goddard and Allison Smith for a win in the 200 medley relay in 2:06.39. Jessica So added a first in the 100 breaststroke in 1:02.86.

    Golfers perfect

The Saratoga golf team remained perfect in the SCVAL with a 409-441 win over Mountain View at Summit Point Golf Course.

The Falcons, 12-0 for the year, were led by junior Sung Kang, who covered the par 72 fairways in 77. Brian Mann carded an 81, Daniel Ruby and Robert Pfeifer each shot an 82, and Kevin Nabbefeld fired an 87.

    Netters top Spartans

Ashvin Soin went three sets for a win at No. 2 singles to start the Saratoga boys tennis team on the road to a 5-2 win over Mountain View last week.

Soin lost the first set 5-7, but battled back to win 6-3, 7-5 to pull out a win for the Falcons.

Elong Chiu nailed a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles and Jason Hou won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4.

Amit Modi and James Chao teamed for a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles and Kenneth Rhow and Andy Tzou combined for a 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 3 to wrap up the match.

Saratoga players went on to compete at the De Anza Division tournament later last week at Courtside in Los Gatos, but no Falcons advanced out of the quarterfinals.

Soin and Tzou each opened with singles wins. Soin beat a Mountain View foe 6-2, 7-5, and Tzou beat a Lynbrook opponent 6-3, 6-4. But both lost in the quarterfinals to face early elimination.

Brian Doore teamed with Chiu and Justin Sung joined Scott Swanberg in doubles play at the league tournament.
