Books Alive! series begins at library
Ji-li Jiang, author of Red Scarf Girl: A Memoir of the Cultural Revolution, will speak and show slides at the Saratoga Community Library, 13650 Saratoga Ave. on May 5 at 7:30 p.m. She is the first guest in the annual Books Alive! series, which brings noted authors to the library.
Jiang, who was 12 when China's Cultural Revolution began, captures in her book the terror of a young girl caught between her love of country and family. The book has won many awards, including the Parents' Choice Gold Award and designations as a Notable Children's Book and a Best Book for Young Adults.
Following the program, Jiang will be available to sign books. The program is free and no reservations are necessary.
Night hike offered at Sanborn Park
The second night hike this spring at Sanborn County Park takes place May 8 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The hike, open to adults, teens and children, begins at the Youth Science Institute's Sanborn Nature Center. Sanborn manager Patricia Kucker leads participants through the evening forest and teaches them to use their senses in sighting and identifying plants and nocturnal animals. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
The non-profit YSI's goal is to provide science education classes, hikes and day camps to develop children's understanding of and appreciation for the interrelationship between humans and the natural world. For information call 867-6940.
Ceramist exhibits at Aegis Gallery
Throughout May, Aegis Gallery's featured artist is Ben Lomond artist Jacqueline Butts. Originally a biochemist, Butts took time off from her job to raise her three children. After taking a ceramics class, she discovered this was her true love and took dozens of additional classes.
In this exhibit, Butts combines bamboo with clay in pieces to create an earthy feel. She considers bamboo one of the most beautiful forms of nature and says it never loses its appeal. A reception for the artist takes place May 8 from 3 to 7 p.m. Regular hours for the gallery, at 14531 Big Basin Way, Unit 2, are Sun., Tue. and Wed., 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Thu. through Sat., 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
