Menold at Linfield

Jeff Menold of Saratoga is the starting third baseman on the baseball team at Linfield College in McMinnville, Ore. Menold, a product locally of Lynbrook High School, hit .437 in four recent games to help Linfield improve its record to 22-13 for the year.

The senior slugger blasted his sixth home run of the year and he knocked in six runs as Linfield took two of three games from Willamette.

Hancock is guest speaker

John Hancock, head football coach at West Valley Community College, will be the guest speaker at a reception and dinner hosted by the Los Gatos Pop Warner Football Association on May 15, 6:30 p.m., at the Los Gatos History Club.

VanDerveer to speak

Stanford University women's basketball coach Tara VanDerveer will be the guest speaker when the Silicon Valley Forum of the Commonwealth Club of California hosts a special program on May 19 at the Hilton Hotel in downtown San Jose.

VanDerveer's topic will be "Having a Clear Vision" as she discusses her role as the Stanford head coach, as well as her experiences as the head coach of the 1996 U.S. Olympic team.

The cost is $7 for members of the Commonwealth Club and $10 for nonmembers. The event will begin with a reception at 6 p.m. and the program to follow at 6:30 p.m. at the Hilton, 300 Almaden Blvd. For more information, call 1-800-847-7730.

49ers coach to speak

Bill McPherson, a member of the coaching staff of the San Francisco 49ers for 20 years, will be the guest speaker at Bellarmine Prep's annual Alumni Council luncheon on May 6.

McPherson, a 1950 graduate of Bellarmine, is a defensive assistant on the Niners staff. He was a coach for all five 49ers Super Bowl teams.

The cost for the luncheon is $15 and it is open to the public. An 11:30 a.m. social will be followed by the noon lunch. Reservations are required.
