WVC students voyage on the sea of fashion

By Shari Kaplan

"Voyages" is the title of this year's spring fashion show by students in the West Valley College fashion design and technology department on May 8 at 7:30 p.m. in the Campus Center. The students will display and model original items of clothing they created as well as lines developed by successful West Valley alumni.

In addition to these fashion statements, students will also model lines by featured designer Azadeh, who owns a boutique in San Francisco and a showroom in Los Angeles, and who is considering opening a shop in the South Bay to accommodate her many Silicon Valley clients.

Formerly the head designer for Bebe clothing stores, Azadeh (pronounced AH-zah-day) has designed the wardrobe of actress Heather Locklear's character on Melrose Place as well as that of "Downtown" Julie Brown of the E! Entertainment Network. A native of Iran, she once worked as clothing designer for the royal family of Saudi Arabia.

Nancy Martin, sales manager with Gerber Garment Technology, will be honored at the show for her contributions to West Valley's fashion design program; the college is the largest educational facility using Gerber Garment computer technology for apparel manufacturing.

Emcees for the event are KRON-TV anchor Catherine Heenan and KNTV anchor Scott Budman. Joining them are a variety of dancers leading into different segments of the program: Silver and Spice, a group of tap-dancing grandmothers; a belly-dancing troupe called Sisters of the Temple Moon; and San Jose Future Shock, a group of young modern dancers.

Students from the restaurant program at Mission College--West Valley's sister college in Santa Clara--offer a catered champagne reception at 6 p.m. in the Campus Center's art gallery. All proceeds from the evening benefit student scholarships. Tickets are $40 for the reception and show, or $15 for the show only. For reservations or more information, call 741-4015.
