Visual artist Mattijs van den Bosch, here from Amsterdam, is working on a series of large drawings about aspects of everyday modern life.

From 7 to 8:15 p.m., fiction writer Valerie Brooks, playwright Carter Lewis and poet Leonore Wilson will read from their works in the main villa, and composer Sylvia Fomina will present examples of her work. A reception with refreshments will follow at 8:15 p.m. Brooks, from Leaburg, Ore., is working on a second novel.

Wilson, who lives in Napa, has been teaching English and creative writing since 1985 at Napa Valley College.

Lewis is a playwright in residence at the GeVa Theatre in Rochester, N.Y., and the winner of several national writing awards. He is working on a new play.

Fomina, born in Argentina, has received several awards for her music, which has been performed throughout Europe. She is working on a new orchestral piece.

Villa Montalvo's Artists in Residence Program, the oldest on the West Coast, brings up to 35 artists a year from all over the world to develop new creative work.

      Summer luncheons on Montalvo's terrace

The Montalvo Service Group's 19th annual summer luncheons at Villa Montalvo will begin Wednesday, June 25, and will continue weekly until August 20.

Under shady umbrellas, guests can look out over the sweeping front lawn and surrounding gardens. The original owner, Sen. James Phelan, used the same terrace to entertain his distinguished guests back in the 1920s.

Seatings are at noon, 12:30 p.m. and 1 p.m. Call 961-5823 after May 12 for reservations. Parking is at the Villa. The $20 price includes an appetizer, entrée, dessert and beverage, with tax and tip included.

Camp St. Andrew's returns this summer

In an age of specialized camps touting themes such as science, rock climbing or computers, St. Andrew's Church offers an old-fashioned camp experience open to children of the parish and their friends.

Camp St. Andrew's celebrates its 20th anniversary this month.

To celebrate the anniversary, St. Andrew's will host a "Scarf Sunday" on August 10, the day after campers and staff return from camp. The church will invite campers and staff from previous camps to join a barbecue after the church service.

Run by an all-volunteer staff that oversees 130 to 150 campers, which allows for a low camper-to-staff ratio and more personal attention for each camper, according to program director Heather Prophet.

The camp offers an assortment of activities, ranging from arts and crafts to archery, swimming, fishing and hiking, and sponsors economically disadvantaged children.

Camp St. Andrew's is a one-week residential summer camp for boys and girls in entering grades 3-9. The camp is Episcopalian, but open to all denominations. Dates are August 3-9. For more information, call St. Andrew's church at 867-3493.
