It's been a number of years since the Saratoga track team could claim bragging rights in the Los Gatos-Saratoga High School District. But the Saratoga boys have every right to brag this year after the way they dominated the Los Gatos track team in a dual meet last week.
The Falcons outran the Wildcats for the first time in many years, and they did it in convincing fashion--with a 102-25 victory in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
It was the only win Saratoga could manage in the dual meet. Los Gatos won in the girls' varsity division and in both the boys' frosh-soph and girls' junior varsity classifications.
But in the boys' varsity class, the day belonged to Saratoga.
Alex Lux won three events, and Brian Carroll was a double winner in Saratoga's lopsided win over Gatos.
Lux raced to a win in the 200 meters in 22.8, with Steve Teng third in 24.3, and Lux also took the 400 in 51.9, with Alex Ling third in 54.3. Lux also soared to a first in the long jump at 18-9, with Matt Hahn second at 18-9 and Steve Teng third at 16-11.
Carroll romped to a first in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 40.5, with Mike Rodriguez third in 54.9. Carroll led a Saratoga sweep in the 110-meter high hurdles, finishing first in 15.6, with Ken Jenq second in 21.0 and Rodriguez third in 22.0.
Brent Colman breezed to a win in the 100 meters in 11.0, with Sean Hanley third in 11.4, and the two teamed with Ling and Carroll to take the 400 relay in 45.2.
Nima Nafei was first in the 800 meters in 2:06.1, with Dave Wilson second in 2:11.1, and they joined with Ling and Eric Yu for a win in the 1600 relay in 3:40.2.
Alex Shoor came through with a victory in the 1600 meters in 4:46.6, with Alex Daniels second in 4:49.9, and Drew Copeland won the 3200 meters in 10:31.7, with Ori Benhamou third in 11:41.9.
Not only did the Falcons win every event on the track, they also dominated in the field.
Joining Lux as field winners for the Falcons were Ling in the triple jump, Todd Anderson in the high jump and Alex Fields in the shot put.
Ling flew 35-1012 to win the long jump, with Teng third at 33-712.
Anderson topped the bar at 5-6 to lead a 'Toga sweep in the high jump. Hahn was second at 5-4, with Terry Guldimann third at 4-8.
Fields led a Saratoga sweep in the shot put. He was first with a 41-1 effort, with Daryl DeKeczer second at 39-712 and Jack Huang third at 37-012.
Mark Marshall was second in the discus at 123-612, with Erik Johnstone third at 108-1012 to round out the list of Saratoga placers.
The girls didn't fare quite as well against Los Gatos, despite two wins apiece by Taylor Teerlink and Jill Moon.
Teerlink romped to a first in the 300 low hurdles in 47.9 and took the 100 hurdles in 15.5, with Moon third in 17.9.
Moon came back to win the triple jump at 32-912, with Jennifer Chan second at
31-134, and Moon led a sweep in the long jump with a first at 16-6. Andrea Lo was second at 15-512, with Chan third at 15-034.
Jody Kellogg led a Saratoga sweep in the 3200, finishing first in 12:59.9, with Whittney Dotzler second in 13:22.4 and Jenny Yoo third in 13:40.3.
Laura Prolo was tops in the high jump at 4-2, and Chan, Camille Behnke, Devin Joplin and Teerlink teamed for a first in the 400 relay in 52.2.
Leah Blackwell was second in the 400 in 68.0, Ashley Ferreira was third in the 800 in 2:38.5, and Janny Huang was third in the shot put at 25-11 to round out the list of Saratoga placers.
Jill Brady won the shot put (24-012) and the discus (73-7), but the Saratoga girls lost 67-58 in junior varsity competition.
Kari Johnstone joined Brady as a double winner, taking the long jump (14-10) and triple jump (29-10).
Kieli Joplin was tops in the 100 (13.4), and Laura Birenbaum won the 200 (28.9), and the two teamed with Alice Teng and Adrienne Osborne for a win in the 400 relay (54.5).
Saratoga lost 94-33 in boys' frosh-soph action, despite a first and two seconds by Jeff Verson. Verson was first in the 65 high hurdles in 11.0, and picked up seconds in the 300 intermediates (48.30) and the long jump (17-11).
Steve Chuang was second in the 65 highs (11.2), with Robert Kim third (11.3), and Chuang was third in the 300 intermediates (50.6).
