Biggest book sale set by Brandeis Women

Billed as Santa Clara Valley's largest used book sale, the 18th annual sale sponsored by Brandeis University National Women's Committee will be held May 16-21 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Westgate Mall, 1600 Saratoga Ave. in San Jose.

Over 35,000 hardcover and paperback used books will be sold as well as games, puzzles, tapes and records.

There will be a preview sale from 6 to 9 p.m. on May 15, costing $5. A half-price bargain sale will be held May 20 and 21. Proceeds benefit the libraries at Brandeis University. Leftover books will be donated to charity. For information, call 867-7462.

Musical drama at Westhope Presbyterian

Baptizer, a new musical drama by Saratoga playwright Mark Teagle, will be presented at Westhope Presbyterian Church, 12850 Saratoga Ave., on Friday, May 10 and Saturday, May 11 at 7:30 p.m.

The play updates the Biblical story of John the Baptist. John, a shabby homeless man, now delivers his message at a freeway rest stop.

Teagle is Westhope's director of music and drama. He has also worked with San Jose Children's Musical Theater and other theater groups here and in Southern California.

The cast includes Teagle as John, Ernie Bramblett as Herod, Jenny Buris as Herodias and Abby Dye as Elizabeth. Also in the play are Darryl Ecke, Aaron Teagle, Art Walton, Daryl Adams, Jordan Lang, Emily Burlingame, Margo Lang, Rachel Eagle, Deborah Lang, Christina Adams, Kim Bratton and Betty Jean Young. Admission is free.

Artist's work appears in several books

Wendy Puthuff Mattson, a 1982 graduate of Saratoga High School, had her watercolor paintings in three books published by Rockport Publishers of Massachusetts.

Her work was included in the series Best of Watercolor, and in Flowers in Watercolor and People in Watercolor. She was also included in the book Creative Watercolor: The Step-By-Step Guide and Showcase.

In 1995, Mattson's work took a patron's purchase award at the national show Watercolor USA at the Springfield Museum of Art in Illinois.

Her paintings are included in both private and corporate collections. Locally, her work is shown at Studio 42 in Los Gatos.

Academic achievement

Anna Miller, a Dartmouth College freshman from Saratoga, has been cited for outstanding academic achievement during winter term 1996. Miller, the daughter of Nancy and Christian Miller, was cited for outstanding work in mathematics, according to the college.

Medicine in action

Lawrence Chih-Hong Hou, son of Mrs. and Mrs. Li-Ho Raymond Hou of Saratoga, participated in the Medicine in Action program at Brown University, visiting with a physician specializing in emergency medicine. Hou is a freshman at Brown.
