Vikings edge Jags in Coast Conference

Jennifer Mallon and Jaime Simon locked up in an eight-inning thriller, but it was Mallon coming out on top when the West Valley Community College women's softball team edged San Jose City College 32-2 in the first round of the playoffs in the South Division of the Coast Conference.

The Vikings broke a 2-2 tie with a run in the eighth, then Mallon blanked the Jaguars in the home half of the inning to nail down the win. She's now 39-9 for the year.

Autumn Kanemoto, Janna Marquez and Chantie McDonnell ripped two hits each to lead West Valley to the victory.

West Valley is now 42-9 for the year.

Falcons right on par

The Saratoga golf team rolled to a 210-275 win over Fremont in Santa Clara Valley Athletic League play last week.

Senior Scott Richardson fired a three-over-par 37 at the Saratoga Country Club to lead the Falcons to the easy win.

Sophomore Andy Kress shot a five-over 39 for the Falcons. Joonsik Maing fired a 41, David Bullinger a 42 and freshman Nicholas Lin a 51.

Saratoga improved to 6-4 in league play with the win.

Vikings split in Coast Conference

A split in the final week of the regular season helped the West Valley Community College baseball team finish over .500 in conference play, but a 15-13 record was good for just fifth in the rugged South Division of the Coast Conference.

The Vikings beat up on last-place Hartnell 24-2, but dropped a tough 5-2 nod to co-champion Mission College later in the week. Matt Troedson was tagged with the loss against the Saints and J.R. Ziegelmann had two hits.

Ziegelmann had three hits, including a double, and drove in three runs in the win over Hartnell.

But it was Ryan Becks who led the Vikes to the win. He belted five hits and knocked in six runs in the game, and he also went the distance to toss a four-hitter.

Ken Fukumoto homered, doubled and singled twice in the win and Jim Alderete doubled twice and singled twice. Dan Amezquita had three hits, Jake Smith and Frank Cortez each singled and doubled, and Ray Hutchison and Jeff Canter added two hits apiece in the win.

West Valley ran its regular-season record to 24-15.
