Making its way over Tulare Hill through the Almaden Valley and into the West Valley along the edge of the Santa Cruz Mountains, the old trail used by Spanish explorer Lt. Juan Bautista de Anza on his trek from northern Mexico to the Bay Area in the 1770's, winds its way through the Santa Clara Valley. The National Park Service established the De Anza route as a National Historic Trail in 1990 and since 1993 local historians and trail enthusiasts are rallying Santa Clara County government agencies and civic groups to establish walking, biking or other means of travel along the historic trail.
