Post office to hold food drive May 13

Every year, the National Association of Letter Carriers holds the largest single day food drive in the country. This year, it is May 13, and Saratoga residents can give their mail carriers food items (non-perishables are best) when they drop off mail that day. Residents may also leave bags of food by their mailboxes. Also, there will be barrel containers in the lobby of the post office on Allendale Avenue for anyone wishing to drop off donations.

The Saratoga post office will donate the food its carriers pick up to the Second Harvest Food Bank in San Jose, according to Rick Araujo, Postmaster for the Saratoga Post Office. Cash donations will be accepted only in the form of a check made payable to the Second Harvest Food Bank. Araujo said that last year the post office collected 58 million pounds of food nationwide.

Playground equipment to be installed at parks

Play equipment will be installed at Kevin Moran and Gardiner parks in the next few months. The city opened bids to contractors on March 28, and the lowest bid was $268,786. The play equipment will be funded by the Park Development Fund, which provides money to be used for improvements to parks or parks buildings.

The City Council awarded Playgrounds Unlimited of Sunnyvale the construction contract at its meeting April 5. Once the company has returned the contract, work can begin, according to Cary Bloomquist, the city staff liaison to the Parks and Recreation Commission. The duration of the project should be about six weeks, Bloomquist said.

Census takers to come to Saratoga

The city of Saratoga would like residents to be aware that census takers began going door-to-door in Saratoga on May 1, in an effort to obtain complete census forms. They will visit all households that did not send in completed forms by the April deadline. The door-to-door phase of the census campaign will last until May 19.

Census data determines how federal and state money is allocated to local communities.

Please contact Cary Bloom-quist in Saratoga's city manager's office with any further questions at 408.868.1258.
