    Wedemeyer scholarships

    The second annual Charlie Wedemeyer Scholarship Awards Dinner will be held on May 17, 6 p.m., at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose, and six deserving athletes will receive $5,000 scholarships.

    All of the winning athletes have overcome some sort of adversity in life, and all have given to their communities.

    Local sports celebrities expected for the awards ceremony include Ronnie Lott, Brent Jones, Peggy Fleming and Chuck Muncie. All money raised from the dinner will support Charlie Wedemeyer Family Outreach, which reaches out to individuals and families coping with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease).

    Cats Hill Criterium

    The 26th annual Cats Hill Criterium returns to downtown Los Gatos on May 13 with bicycle racing from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. The start-finish line is located at Tait and Nicholson and riders will race through neighborhood streets.

    In addition to the racing, there will be vendor booths, food and music.

    Impact tryouts

    The De Anza Impact, a girls under-11 Class 1 soccer team, is holding tryouts for the fall season. Players born after July 31, 1989, are eligible.
