    Art group hosts ceramics demo

The Saratoga Contemporary Artists invites all interested members of the community to attend its May meeting, at which South Bay artist Mahoko Dahte will demonstrate her ceramics work. A native of Tokyo, Dahte has received many awards for her ceramic wall sculptures. In addition to these sculptures, she also creates Japanese tea utensils using traditional wood-fired kilns.

The meeting takes place May 11, at the Saratoga Community Library, 13650 Saratoga Ave., and is free.

    For more information, call 408.866.1309.

    Children can audition for 'Rumplestiltskin'

The Saratoga Recreation Department invites all local children in grades 2 through 12 to audition for the Festival Theatre Ensemble's upcoming production of the fairy tale classic Rumplestiltskin. Auditions take place June 3, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; singing is not required.

Callbacks will be from 2 to 4 p.m. that same day. The fee is $70 for children and $40 for adults for those who choose to accept their assigned roles. All participants provide their own costumes. Parents, if not acting in the show, must also either help out in a volunteer position or pay an additional $40. There is also a mandatory meeting for parents of the actors on June 6, at 7:30 p.m. The Rumplestiltskin performance is scheduled for early August, with two or three days of rehearsals, beginning June 8. For more information, call 408.868.1248 or 408.868.1249.

Outdoorsmen tell about California Coastal Trail

As part of its ongoing series of community lectures and programs, REI Saratoga has invited outdoor enthusiasts Bob Lorentzen and Richard Nichols to give a slide presentation on the California Coastal Trail and to share highlights from their two guidebooks on this 1,200-mile scenic route. The first volume of Hiking the California Coastal Trail covers Oregon to Monterey; the second is Monterey to Mexico.

REI is in the El Paseo de Saratoga shopping center. There is no charge to attend this event. For more information, call 408.871.8765.
