City clerk is now a true city clerk

Saratoga city clerk Susan Ramos last week became a certified municipal clerk, honored by the International Institute of Municipal Clerks.

To gain the certification, Ramos received her bachelor of science degree in business management from the University of Redlands, and also completed a number of related courses at the University of La Verne. She has also attended conferences and seminars hosted by the California League of Cities, the City Clerks Association of California and other organizations specializing in related fields.

In the state, 263 others are certified as municipal clerks. The program is designed to help clerks improve job performance through instruction in notary and records keeping, among other subjects.

Seniors can get help from county

A new service implemented May 1 by the Santa Clara County Social Services Agency will provide senior citizens access to 24-hour, face-to-face emergency response to all reports of alleged abuse or risk of abuse.

The service and related programs come as a bill promoted last year by then-Sen. Bill Lockyer.

The law also requires counties to respond to all reports of elder abuse, provide early intervention, case management services, and emergency services including shelter, food and clothing.

In Santa Clara County, the new 24-hour reporting line is 1-800-414-2002.

    Library discussion on pesticide use

The Saratoga Community Library will host the Sierra Club's Guadalupe Regional Group May 20, which will provide a panel of speakers to address growing concerns over risks associated with urban pesticide use.

The talks will center around the use of and reliance on pesticides by both corporate and domestic agriculture sources, and their effect on people.

The Guadalupe Group will also provide emphasis on trends and risks in schools and other public buildings and parks.

Featured guests include Elisa Lynch of Pesticide Watch. The discussion will begin at 7:30pm in the library's Community Room. For more information, call Bob Serina at 448-5120.
