Saratoga Lions Club offers scholarships
High school students living in Saratoga may be eligible for a $1,000 scholarship from the Saratoga Lions Club.
One or two scholarships will be awarded based on a number of factors including citizenship, service and accomplishments shown on an application and judged by Lions Club members. Applications are available from local high school scholarship coordinators or by calling 867-2300. The deadline for submission of applications has been extended to May 18.
ALTRANS announces poster contest winner
Erica Baba of Argonaut School was recently announced as the winner of the ALTRANS/Saratoga Union School District Earth Day poster contest held during the week of April 12.
Baba's poster portrayed ways for students to get to school other than by driving cars but instead by using alternative transportation such as bikes. Her poster, along with others entered in the contest, will be on display in Saratoga City Hall through May 14.
Public can look at school materials before adoption
Instructional materials being considered for use in meeting the state's new education content standards for grades K-8 are available for the public to view before they are submitted for adoption by the State Board of Education.
From now until May 26, residents can look at the materials on weekdays at the Learning Resources Display Center in the Santa Clara County Office of Education, 1290 Ridder Park Drive, San Jose. The center is open 7:30 a.m. to 5 pm. on Mondays and Fridays and from 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. The center also has forms available for public comment on the materials.

Saratoga School to host talent show
Saratoga School will hold its annual talent show on May 27 at 7 p.m. in the Argonaut School cafeteria at 13200 Shadow Mountain Drive.
This year's theme is "Saratoga School's Walk of Fame" and will feature 140 students singing, dancing, reciting poetry and performing instrumentals. Admission is free.
Scholarships offered by MS Association
The Multiple Sclerosis Association of America is sponsoring a national essay competition in which high school and college students can compete for college scholarships.
The Learn MS '99 competition is open to high school juniors and seniors and college freshmen and sophomores. Participants must write a 500 to 1000 word essay on how multiple sclerosis affects a person and his or her family on a daily basis. The entries must be typed and double-spaced and can be in the form of a letter, poem or feature story.
The deadline is June 5. Registration forms can be obtained by calling 1-800-LEARN MS or by emailing to msaa@msaa.com.
