    School district holds art show

    The Los Gatos­Saratoga Joint Union High School District holds its annual art show May 11­15 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily in an area next to Gene's Market, 18850 Cox Ave. in Saratoga. A reception for the artists takes place May 14 at 6:30 p.m. The show consists of paintings, drawings, photography, ceramics and sculpture by Los Gatos and Saratoga High School students.

    State park use is free during May

    In observance of State Parks Month, the California Department of Parks and Recreation is holding a promotion to increase visitation and encourage awareness of California's 265 state parks.

    Free admission coupons are available for normal day-use at participating public libraries. For information about California State Parks, call (800) 777-0369.

    Local author to speak at library

    Harry Farrell, author of the best-selling crime drama Shallow Grave in Trinity County speaks May 12 at 7:30 p.m. at the Saratoga Community Library, 13650 Saratoga Ave. His book details the kidnapping and murder of a 14-year-old Berkeley girl in the 1950s. At that time, Farrell covered the case for the San Jose Mercury News. He has also written Swift Justice: Murder and Vengeance in a California Town, which recounts the San Jose lynching of two men who confessed to the abduction and murder of 22-year-old Brooke Hart. This free program is part of the library's spring author series, Books Alive! A Celebration of Reading.

    West Valley holds free career day

    West Valley College, 14000 Fruitvale Ave., holds a free career program orientation day on May 15, beginning at 10 a.m. Faculty and staff will be available to answer questions about career programs. Students and prospective students can learn about dozens of different fields, from high to low-tech.

    Staff will answer questions about financial aid, childcare, health services, Equal Opportunity programs, student services, adult re-entry and educational transition. In the afternoon, WVC students can participate in an orientation and assessment session. For information, call 741-2098.
