Principal flutist: Clement Kiew

Saratogan is principal flutist in two upcoming CYS shows

Saratoga resident and Lynbrook High School senior Clement Kiew performs as principal flutist during two upcoming performances of the California Youth Symphony--May 17 at 2:30 p.m. at the San Mateo Performing Arts Center and May 24 at 2:30 p.m. at Flint Center, on the campus of DeAnza College in Cupertino.

The program, conducted by music director Leo Eylar, consists of The Firebird Suite by Stravinsky, Symphony No. 7 by Dvorák, a flute piece by Khachaturian--in which Kiew plays solo--and the first movement of a Beethoven violin concerto.

Kiew, a native of Penang, Malaysia, began his music career at age 7 when he learned to play the piano. He took up the flute at age 11, studying with his current teacher, Melody Holmes-Schaefle. He has since won many honors and awards for his musical talents on flute and piccolo and has played in many bands and orchestras, including the Junior California Music Educators Award Honor Band, the Santa Clara County Honor Band and the California All-State Honor Band, the CODA Honor Orchestra and the National Honor Orchestra.

A soloist with the Lynbrook Wind Ensemble, Kiew has been a member of the CYS for four years and attends master classes with professor Frances Blaisdell of Stanford University, the same university Kiew plans to attend this fall. He is a member of the National Honor Society and serves as public relations manager of the California Scholarship Federation. He is also a flute teacher at his own music studio.

Tickets for the CYS concerts are $8 for adults and $4 for students and seniors. For more information, call 650/325-6666.
