Saratoga looks to neighboring Monte Sereno for inspiration

By Sarah Lombardo

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, the Monte Sereno Town Council should be flattered by the Saratoga City Council's plans for its new dais. The council is bringing in the same designer who created the Monte Sereno council's dais to create the piece for Saratoga's Council Chambers.

With chunks missing from the front and more than a few simple repairs having been made on it over the years, the current dais is nearing the woodpile, said City Manager Larry Perlin.

"It can't be repaired anymore," Perlin said. "It's not worth sinking any money into it."

City staffers have already met with Wayne Larue, who built the furniture in his garage wood shop, twice: once to look over the Monte Sereno Town Council dais and another time at Saratoga's Community Theater, where council meetings are held on the stage using a roll-out dais.

Perlin said he and other staffers liked the Monte Sereno dais and want to model the new Saratoga platform after it.

"It's very functional, very modular," he said. In addition, the piece stores easily.

No estimates have been given yet for how much the new dais will cost, but Perlin said he is expecting it to cost about $4,000. Larue is expected to provide the city with some sketches in the near future.
