Saratoga NewsNews BriefsGGG to host a cleanup day The Saratoga Good Government Group is hosting a shrubbery pruning and cleanup day at 8 a.m. on Saturday, May 16. The GGG wants to cut back on overgrown trees and shrubs that can impede foot traffic on walkways and prevent street sweepers from doing their job. GGG members say that because budget constraints left the city without the resources to trim the bushes and trees, they are asking volunteers to meet on the corner of Saratoga and Cox avenues to help prune and clean. Call GGG vice president Al Roten at 252-0313. WVRW to host local educator Educator Gloria Hom will speak at a function hosted by the West Valley Republican Women, Federated, Thursday, May 21, at 9:30 a.m. at the Saratoga Country Club. Hom is chairwoman of the economics department at Mission College and division chairwoman for the social science division. There is a $6 charge for the presentation, which includes a continental breakfast. For more information, call Kay Eshleman at 354-3373. Commissioner commended The City Council commended outgoing Public Safety Commissioner Angie Fredrick on May 6 for her service. Fredrick first became a commissioner in September 1993. Fredrick also served as an ALTRANS liaison, contributed to the Public Safety Commission Code Enforcement Task Force in spring 1997 in anticipation of the city's reorganization, and worked with school-related issues, including serving on the school resource officer committee and monitoring crossing guards. Senior volunteers needed for study The Saratoga Senior Center will be scheduling appointments for seniors interested in participating in "LifeSpan: A Physical Assessment Study Benefiting Older Adults" on May 26. The physical assessments will result in data that will be used to develop the first national standards for evaluating the fitness and mobility of seniors. To schedule an appointment, call Olga MacFarlane at 868-1257.
