Daniels runs to win at finals

Top 'Toga placers advance to CCS North Section

Alex Daniels can run with the best of them.

And he did last Thursday night when he ran to a victory in the 800 meters at the league finals in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League at De Anza Community College.

The Saratoga speedster was one of 13 individual champions at the rugged De Anza Division finals, and one of a handful of Falcons to qualify for the Central Coast Section North Section meet set for May 16, 1 p.m., on the Los Gatos track.

Daniels figures to advance to the CCS trials coming up May 23 at San Jose City College along with teammates Michael Black and Josh Glasser in boys' competition and Taylor Teerlink and Anne Ricketts in girls' competition.

Daniels, Black and Glasser were the top placers for the Falcons at the league meet last week.

Daniels was first in the 800 meters in 2:00.4, finishing more than a second ahead of his nearest rival.

Black was second in the high jump at 6-0 and added a third in the long jump at 19-1012, and Glasser was third in the 100 meters in 11.1 and fourth in the 200 meters in 23.4.

Alex Shoor ended up fifth in the mile in 4:40.8 for the Falcons and Dave Wilson was fifth in the 800 in 2:07.1. Tristan Hoare added a sixth in the 400 in 53.7 to round out the list of Saratoga placers in the boys' varsity division.

Brent Colman, Black, Eric Yu and Glasser joined forces to nail a fourth in the 400 relay in 43.85 and Wilson, Glasser, Hoare and Daniels combined to finish fifth in the mile relay in 3:39.4.

Teerlink and Ricketts starred for the Saratoga girls' varsity at the league meet.

Teerlink was second in the 100-meter hurdles in 16.2 with teammate Laura Birenbaum fourth in 16.6, and she added a third in the 300 low hurdles in 49.1. Ricketts was second in the two-mile in 11:47.7 and third in the mile in 5:24.

Teerlink and Birenbaum teamed with Carla Graziosi and Laura Prolo for a second place finish in the mile relay in 4:16.4.

Heather Finnecy heaved the discus 101-9 for an individual fourth, and Prolo topped the high jump bar at 4-8 for a fifth.

Birenbaum, Brie Wilson, Alice Teng and Teerlink combined for a sixth in the 400 relay in 53.6.

The Saratoga boys came through with a strong showing in the frosh-soph division with individual champs Ian Jang and Eric Giannella leading the way.

Jang was tops in the triple jump at 40-11 and added a fourth in the long jump at 18-512, and Giannella was first in the shot put with a 45-5 heave and added a sixth in the discus at 99-9.

Jesse Alejandro raced to a second in the 200 meters in 24.3 and he was fifth in the 100 in 12.1. Alejandro also teamed with Justin Quon, Robert Kim and Jang for a second in the 400 meter relay in 46.70.

David Cheng was second in the 65 high hurdles in 9.90 and fourth in the 300 intermediate hurdles in 45.8. Jeff Verson was third in both the 65 highs in 10.00 and the 300 intermediates in 45.6.

Quon was fourth in the 200 meters in 25.4, Shih was fifth in the long jump at 17-9, Nobuaki Tomine was fifth in the two-mile in 11:12.8, Jeff Beyers was sixth in the 800 in 2:08.6 and Scott Duncan was sixth in the high jump at 5-2.

Beyers, David Lin, Kim and Jang combined to finish fourth in the mile relay in 3:52.4.

Ashley Ferriera and Devin Joplin each ran to thirds to lead the effort for the Saratoga girls' junior varsity.

Ferriera romped to a third in the 800 meters in 2:36.6 and Joplin covered the 300 low hurdles in 53.8 for a third.

Kari Johnstone was fourth in the long jump at 13-10 and fifth in the triple jump at 29-34, and Jennifer Dines was fourth in the 300 lows in 54.0.

Joplin led the Falcons to a third-place finish in the 400-meter relay in 55.40, and Dines and Ferriera got together with Catherine Smith and Meghan Miyamoto for a fifth in the mile relay in 4:42.5.

Panthers Fourth

In other local track and field action, the Prospect boys ran to a team fourth at the finals in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League at West Valley College in Saratoga.

Matt Heling was third in both the 100 meters at 11.34 and the 200 in 22.84 and also helped the Panthers to a second in the 400-meter relay in 45.21

Lee Robinson came through with a second in the long jump at 20-334 for the Panthers, and David Ihara was third in the triple jump at 39-212

Westmont's T.J. Aimonetti had a big day at the Santa Teresa finals. The big Westmont weightman won the shot put with a heave of 47-112, and he was also third in the discus at 127-8.

Jordan Lee was third in the high jump at 5-8 for the Warriors.

In girls' competition, Alison Prehn starred for Prospect at the league meet, winning one event and placing third in another.

Prehn won a league title in the triple jump with a leap of 33-2, and she added a third in the 400 meters in 62.29.

Stacey Owens delivered a second in the shot put with a 33-1112 for the Panthers.

Melissa Taylor and Debbie Navarro each placed third in the weights for Westmont at the finals. Taylor was third in the shot put at 33-0 and Navarro was third in the discus at 64-612.
