      Workshops look at region's future

The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District has preserved more than 41,000 acres of mountain, foothill and bayshore land and manages 23 open space preserves. And now the district is taking stock of the region's park and open space lands and examining what this region will be like in another 25 years.

The public is encouraged to participate in a workshop dealing with long-range planning on June 4 at 7:30 p.m. at the Los Gatos Town Council Chambers, 110 E. Main St. Similar workshops will be held in other cities.

The district, which stretches from San Carlos to Los Gatos, gets funding from property tax revenues. For more information about the long-range planning process, call the district offices at 415/691-1200.

      Historian discusses local pioneer

Mary Lou Lyon, a well-known historian of California and the West, will be the speaker at the May 19 meeting of the Saratoga Historical Foundation at 7:30 p.m. in the Saratoga Community Library.

Her topic, "Elisha Stephens, Pioneer," concerns one of the key figures in the Murphy-Townsend-Stephens Party that organized the first wagon train to bring emigrants from the Midwest to California in 1844. Stephens settled near Cupertino in an area that became known as Blackberry Farm, and his name is perpetuated in Stevens Creek and the boulevard of the same name. The transition from Stephens to Stevens is part of the story.

Lyon taught California and U.S. history, among other courses, at Homestead High School in Cupertino for 31 years. She has carried out many other teaching assignments, has received an array of honors and awards from historical and educational associations and maintains membership in several professional organizations.
