Dr. Marchelle Fox, president of West Valley College, was presented with the "Woman of Distinction Award" by Soroptimist International of Los Gatos-Saratoga during a May 7 luncheon.
The Soroptimist recognition was instituted in 1984 to recognize women who have made outstanding contributions through their professional business or volunteer activities.
Fox has spent more than 25 years as an educator, starting as a teacher of early childhood education in Berkeley.
She received her B.A. degree in elementary education and social sciences from San Jose State University. Her master's degree in human development was completed at Pacific Oaks College in Pasadena. Doctoral studies were undertaken at the University of Texas at Austin, where she was a Kellogg fellow. She holds a Ph.D. in higher-education administration.
For more than 15 years, Dr.Fox worked at San Diego City College, where she served as a professor of child development, director of the child development center and president of the academic senate. She also served as dean of instruction and dean for institutional advancement at San Diego City College and as interim vice president for study Services at San Diego's Miramar College.
