Memorial Day celebration set
Memorial Day is just around the corner and preparations are set for this year's ceremony, to be held on May 27. The event, sponsored by the Saratoga Foothill Club, marks the continuation of a 60-year-old tradition and will include the Saratoga High School band, Color Guard of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Children of the American Revolution, and Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.
It will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the Memorial Arch in Blaney Plaza, on which a commemorative wreath will be placed. The band will play while the Veterans of Foreign Wars raise the flag.
The ceremony will continue up Oak Street to Madronia Cemetery, where laurel sprays will be placed on the graves of 500 servicemen. Attendees will hear readings by the mayor, the Pledge of Allegiance, an address by a Pearl Harbor veteran, and the national anthem. The ceremony will conclude with a benediction and the playing of "Taps."
Youth Commission seeks applicants
Applications are now being accepted for the 1996-97 Saratoga Youth Commission. Any resident entering seventh through 12th grade in fall 1996 is eligible to apply for a seat on the 12-member commission, which was established in 1988 to promote communication between teenagers and the City Council and plan educational and entertaining activities for Saratoga's youth. Terms for all commissioners except seniors are two years. Meetings are held on the first Monday of each month from September through June.
Applications are available at City Hall and must be turned in to the deputy city clerk by May 23. Interviews will be on June 1.
