Mariners drop one

Andy Cheng tripled and singled twice and Brian Stirm had two hits, but the Mariners of the Saratoga Pony League dropped a tough 8-4 nod to the Giants of San Jose Pacific Pony Baseball in interleague play last weekend.

James Lil, Kelly Mathew, Brent Cowdrey and Adam Heintz also had hits for the Mariners.

Kevin Sparrer led the Giants with a single, double and triple, and Jason Seip added two hits for the winners.

Vikings advance

Jennifer Mallon flipped back-to-back shutouts to lead the West Valley Community College women's softball team to the title at the Northern California Sub-Regionals at San Jose City College.

Mallon fired a two-hit shutout to lift the Vikings to a 1-0 win over rival San Jose City, then tossed a one-hit shutout in a 6-0 win over Diablo Valley College in the finals.

Mallon, 42-9 for the year, helped the Vikes improve to 45-9 and advance in postseason play.

Chantie McDonnell singled and doubled and Janna Marquez, Jennifer Ellinger and Autumn Kanemoto had two hits each in the 6-0 win over Diablo Valley. Tracy Micheletti knocked in two runs for the Vikings.

Marquez singled and doubled to lead a four-hit West Valley attack in the 1-0 win over San Jose, and McDonnell doubled to drive the Vikings to a 3-2 win over Fresno City College to open the tourney.

Football signups

The Campbell-Saratoga Youth Football organization is holding signups for the 1996 fall season. Signups will be accepted for both football players and cheerleaders, and the organization is also looking for coaches. For more information, call 327-9510.

Summer basketball

A summer basketball clinic hosted by Saratoga girls' varsity basketball coach Bret Yeilding will be held June 17-July 25 in the Saratoga gym.

The clinic runs from 1-3 p.m., Mondays through Thursdays, and is open to girls in the seventh-12th grades. The cost is $125 per player, and preregistration is advised since space is limited. For more information, call Yeilding at 585-5883.
