Teerlink, relay team win titles for Saratoga track
Boys', girls' teams make good showing
By Dick Sparrer
It was Taylor Teerlink's last trip of the high hurdles after four years of competition in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
And the Saratoga senior planned to make the most of it.
Teerlink covered the 100 high hurdles in 15.90 to finish first at the De Anza finals, one of just two victories on the day for the boys and girls from Saratoga High.
Teerlink won the hurdles title, and the Saratoga boys 400-meter relay finished first overall in a season best 44.61 to help the Falcons to a team third behind Los Gatos and Gunn.
Dan Morse, Andrew Bosworth, David Cheng and James Lee joined forces to run to a title for the Falcons. Bosworth, Cheng and Morse later teamed with Jesse Alejandro for a second in the 1,600-meter relay in 3:35.90.
The strong performances in the relays helped the Falcons run up 74 team points to finish behind the Wildcats and Titans.
The Saratoga girls ended up seventh in the eight-team division, but Teerlink did what she could to get the Falcons going.
Not only did she finish first in the high hurdles, she was fourth in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 49.25 and she combined with Eevi Aura, Neha Talreja and Jamie Pfeifer to finish third in the 1,600 relay in 4:15.83.
Heather Finnecy nailed a fourth-place finish in the discus with a toss of 102-1, and Aura, Talreja and Pfeifer joined with Nicola Rooke to finish sixth in the 400 relay in 51.81.
In boys' action, Alejandro led a solid showing in the 400 meters for the Falcons. Alejandro was second in 51.10, with Morse fifth in 53.81 and David Lin sixth in 56.46.
David Cheng was second in the 300 intermediate hurdles in 42.51 and third in the 110-meter highs in 15.97. Jeff Verson was fourth in the highs in 16.67 and fifth in the intermediates in 43.92.
Bosworth was third in the 200 meters in 23.26, with Alejandro fifth in 23.42.
Jacob Christopherson was third in the 1,600-meter run in a personal best 4:32.16, and Richard La was third in the 800 in 2:04.51, with David La fifth in 2:05.83.
Ian Jang added a fifth in the long jump at 19-2 1/2, with Steve Chaung sixth at 18-9.
Don Prolo was second in the 3,200 in 10:43.48, third in the 1,600 and fourth in the 800 to lead the Saratoga showing in the boys frosh-soph division.
Arnold Chu was third in the 200 in 23.8 and fifth in the 100; Ryuta Saka was fifth in the 65 high hurdles and sixth in the 300 intermediates; and David Evan tied for fifth in the high jump.
Larsen a champ
Westmont senior Eric Larsen fired a cool 74, then beat a Lincoln golfer on the first hole of a playoff round to win the Blossom Valley Athletic League individual title last week.
Larsen carded a three-over par 74 at the Santa Teresa Golf Course, good for a first-place tie with a golfer from Lincoln. The two advanced to a playoff for the title, and Larsen won it all on the first hole.
Over in the SCVAL individual tournament, David Anido of Lynbrook and Daniel Ruby, Kevin Nabbefeld and Robert Pfeifer of Saratoga all finished in the top 10 at the par 72 Santa Clara Golf and Tennis Center.
Anido finished with a two-round 153 to tie for third and Ruby ended up with a 154 to tie for fifth. Nabbefeld tied for seventh with a 155 and Pfeifer tied for 10th with Amir Hussein of Homestead, each shooting a 157.
Ruby and Nabbefeld went on to shoot matching 74s on the par-71 Rancho Cañada East Course in the CCS regional tournament. The two qualified for the CCS tournament with their performances.
Vikes fall to Mats
The Lynbrook boys tennis team made it to the finals of the CCS tournament before falling 6-1 to powerful Monta Vista last week.
It was also quite a year for the Vikings, who put together an impressive showing in the postseason to get into the CCS finals. Lynbrook upset Bellarmine 4-3 in the semifinals to earn the shot at the Mats in the title match.
Lynbrook's Edward Perepelitsky and Jan Tzou combined for a win at No. 1 doubles to break up Monta Vista's bid for a sweep.
The Vikings, 14-8 for the season, opened the CCS tournament with a 5-2 win over Leland and then beat Bellarmine 4-3. Both the Chargers and Bells are perennial tennis powers in the section.
Mike Tai won 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3 singles and Paul Perepelitsky won 6-4, 6-0 at No. 4 to help the Vikings to the win over the Bells.
E. Perepelitsky and Tzou teamed for a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles and Brandon Katz and Jon Lee won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3.
James Liu lost a three-set heartbreaker at No. 1 singles 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.
Tomer Azenkot pulled out a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles to start the Vikings on the road to the 5-2 win over Leland. Tai won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3 singles and P. Perepelitsky won 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 at No. 4.
Michael Wu and Russell D'sa nailed a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles and Katz and Lee teamed for a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 3 doubles.
Morris, Jama star
Prospect's Nevin Morris finished second and teammate Abrahin Jama was third at the Santa Teresa Division tennis finals last week.
Morris, a senior, drew a first-round bye before beating a Santa Teresa foe 6-4, 6-3 to move along in the tourney. He whipped a Valley Christian opponent in the semifinals, but lost a 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 heartbreaker to another VC player in the finals.
Jama, just a sophomore, won his first two matches before losing in the semis.
Jama opened with a 7-5, 2-6, 6-0 win over Willow Glen's Cyrus Yazdani, then beat a Silver Creek opponent 1-6, 6-3, 6-4. He lost to a Valley foe in the semifinals, but beat another VC player in the consolation finals 6-0, 6-2 to clinch third overall.
Prospect seniors Donald Gagliasso and Russel Oritz teamed for a 0-6, 6-4, 6-3 doubles win over Jose Ocampo and Huy Nguyen of Willow Glen, but they lost their second match 6-2, 6-4 to a team from Silver Creek.
Brian Roh and Tim Ogawa, a couple of juniors from Prospect, lost 6-1, 6-0 to Willow Glen juniors Chris Lyons and Minh Phan in the first round.
Warriors fall
The Westmont boys volleyball team lost in the first round of the CCS tournament, losing in three straight games to Woodside Priory 15-9, 15-13, 15-5. Still, it was quite a year for the Warriors. Westmont rolled to a 20-6 record in an outstanding 2000 performance.
