Saratoga resident wins award from the California CPA group
By Kara Chalmers
The California Society of Certified Public Accountants awarded Saratoga resident Robert Petersen the organization's Distinguished Service Award this month. The award is the organization's highest honor, and Petersen will receive it this summer at CalCPA's annual meeting in San Diego.
Petersen was the founding president of the Saratoga Education Foundation in 1988. The nonprofit SEF provides supplementary funding for public elementary and high schools in the city.
Petersen, 61, started his career as an accountant with the Price Waterhouse accounting firm and worked there for almost 20 years. He then established his own firm, Petersen Associates, in Menlo Park. He is the only CalCPA member to win both the Distinguished Service Award and the Meritorious Service Award form the CPA Education Foundation.
Petersen volunteers his time and his leadership skills to CalCPA, according to Thomas Lino, CalCPA chairman of the award's selection committee.
Petersen also served as treasurer for Tom Campbell's campaign for state representative. He served on a task force of the Council of Foundations, which studied how charitable organizations would be affected if the nation switched to a flat-tax or sales tax system.
He is the author of the Research Institute of America's California Tax Handbook, and is an instructor with the California CPA Education Foundation.
Petersen also is involved in other community activities. He is the director of the Sierra Health Foundation, which funds health care programs and research in Northern California. He is president and trustee of the Global Health Foundation, chair of the Research Institute of America National Subscribers Advisory Board, and executive committee member of the Lincoln Club of Northern California.
