    Memorial Day salutes veterans

Annual Memorial Day ceremonies will be held May 31 starting at 9:30 a.m. to provide "A Tribute to Our Veterans."

Beginning at the Memorial Arch Blaney Plaza next to the Saratoga Fire Station, community members will give an invocation, present a wreath and raise the American flag. The Saratoga High School Band will also perform musical selections.

The group will then walk to Madronia Cemetery on Oak Street at 10 a.m. for more patriotic music and greetings from community members, including Saratoga Mayor Jim Shaw.

Final chance for septic tank users

The Saratoga City Council is likely to adopt the city's new sewer ordinance after giving it a second reading May 19. It will also probably be the last time opponents of the new city code will be able to protest it publically and before the council.

Previously almost unnoticed, the new law has gained some opposition since it was first brought up more than a month ago. The ordinance will require septic tank users to connect to available sewer lines if one exists within 200 feet of their property. In some cases, opponents argue, the conversion is sure to be extremely expensive although the city has written in an extension clause for those with "financial hardship."

The ordinance comes as part of the Saratoga Creek lawsuit settlement (see story, this page). The meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the Saratoga Civic Theatre. Call 868-1200 for information.

    Summer recreation offerings expanded

The city's Parks and Recreation Department has expanded its summer offerings.

It's added another camp and stretched out its summer to 10 weeks rather than three. Most classes are open for youths ages 11-16.

"Endless Summer '99" runs in week-long sessions all summer and has been geared to children taking summer-school classes.

Also, four different adventure camps will be held, including the backpacking trip "adventure trail," beach-going "extremely wet adventure," theme-park "extreme adventure" and the "extremely mysterious adventure."

    Call 868-1248 for more information.
