    Scott Kirby plays ragtime piano

Scott Kirby, who plays ragtime piano tunes in venues throughout the United States and Europe, performs May 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the Carriage House Theater at Villa Montalvo, 15400 Montalvo Road, Saratoga. The concert, which is not part of Villa Montalvo's 1999 Performing Arts Series, is a collaboration between the Steinway Society of the Bay Area and Montalvo.

A composer as well as a pianist, the Louisiana native plays a diverse program of styles including classical, ragtime, blues, boogie-woogie and early jazz. He peppers his shows with selections from pioneers in syncopation such as Scott Joplin, innovators like Jelly Roll Morton and modern ragtime composers.

In the past, Kirby has given educational concerts for students at Los Gatos' St. Mary's school and St. Andrew's in Saratoga. The appearance at Montalvo marks his first public concert in this area. In addition to live performances, Kirby has recorded several CDs, both as a solo player and in collaboration with others. Tickets are $20 each. For more information, call 961-5858.
