A local framing expert gives demo at artists' meeting

The Saratoga Contemporary Artists invites anyone interested in art to attend its May 25 meeting, which takes place at 7 p.m. in the Saratoga Community Library, 13650 Saratoga Ave. Mark Dawson, an educator in San Jose's Oak Grove School District for 18 years before becoming a frame- shop owner, will demonstrate proper framing techniques for artists and all types of art. The owner of Frame-It Art & Design for nine years, Dawson is also a professional photographer who develops and prints his own film.

The SCA is a community organization that promotes the arts and lets artists of different levels and styles socialize, network, review each others' works and occasionally paint together. For more information, call 354-9046.

    Luncheon honors SASCC volunteers

Community band to play park concert

Wildwood Park on Fourth Street will be the site of an afternoon concert featuring the Saratoga Community Band on May 23 at 4 p.m.

For the event, which drew about 1,000 people last year, the band is planning to perform selections from musicals, folk music, jazz and marches.

This will be the 10th annual concert in the park, and the band is being conducted by West Valley College Band director Craig Northrup. Northrup is the former music director of the Vienna International Music Festival in Austria, and is also Saratoga High School's former music director.

The band started in 1990 with 35 members and is now 95 members strong. The band is open to anyone interested in playing music. All are welcome to come to the concert and are encouraged to bring picnics and chairs to sit on. Call 741-2096 for more information.
