Community Band holds old-fashioned concert in the park

The Saratoga Community Band will perform an old-fashioned Sunday afternoon concert in Wildwood Park on Fourth Street at 4:30 p.m. June 1. Admission is free.

The band will perform selections from Broadway musicals, marches, folk music, jazz and popular tunes. The annual park concert has attracted hundreds of people each year for the past seven years.

The band is directed by West Valley College Band Director Craig Northrup, former director of the Saratoga High School Band and music director of the Vienna International Music Festival in Austria.

The community band started in 1990 with 35 members and now numbers over 90 musicians of all ages.

The band rehearses weekly on Monday evenings at 7:15 p.m. at West Valley College Music Department and is open to all interested musicians.

Strawberry Festival moves to Saratoga

The Eastfield Ming Quong Strawberry Festival, a Los Gatos tradition since 1960, moves to Saratoga June 7 and 8 for the first time. The festival will relocate at West Valley College, 14000 Fruitvale Ave.

The two-day festival annually raises more than $70,000 for Eastfield Ming Quong, a nonprofit provider of mental health services for emotionally troubled children and their families. Staffed by over a thousand volunteers, it includes food, live entertainment, a children's carnival, arts and crafts and a 5K run/walk on Sunday at 8 p.m. to benefit the Bay Area Lupus Foundation. Admission is free. Hours are from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Good Government Group endorses school measure

The Good Government Group of Saratoga endorsed the Saratoga Elementary School District Bond Measure D after hearing details of the $40 million school bond issue from school board members Cindy Ruby and Stephanie Petrossi.

The 30-year bonds, if approved by voters June 3, will provide funds for school repair, said Ruby and Petrossi.
