    Saratoga to host annual basketball clinic for girls

    Summer camps cover gamut of sports

    The eighth annual Saratoga Skills Clinic, a basketball camp for girls entering the sixth through 12th grades in the fall, will be held June 17-July 11 in the Saratoga High School gym.

    Camp hours are 1-3 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, and the cost for the four-week camp is $275 per player. Preregistration is recommended since space is limited and the camp has sold out in the last two years.

    Saratoga girls varsity head coach Bret Yeilding and his staff will head up the camp, which will cover offensive skills that include passing, dribbling, ball handling and shooting.

    SJSU camps

    San Jose State University (SJSU) baseball coach Sam Piraro will head up the annual SJSU summer baseball camps for players ages 6-17 again this summer.

    Sessions include comprehensive camps July 8-12 and July 22-26, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. each day, for players ages 6-16. The cost is $110 per player, and camps are limited to the first 75 players.

    Specialty camps are slated for July 29-Aug. 2 (pitching camp for ages 12-17, 10 a.m.-noon, and hitting camp for ages 9-17, 1-3 p.m.). The cost is $125 per player (both sessions $200), and camps are limited to the first 25 campers.

    All campers receive a free T-shirt, and there will be camper evaluations and special awards.

    Basketball camp

    The annual Los Gatos Wildcat Summer Basketball Camp returns to the high school gym in June, with sessions scheduled for players ages 7-15.

    The camps, under the direction of Los Gatos boys varsity coach Jim Marino, will be held June 17-21 (9 a.m.-noon each day) and June 24-28 (1-4 p.m. each day) for players ages 7-12 and June 17-21 (1-3 p.m. each day) for players ages 13-15.

    Camps will emphasize fundamentals in shooting, passing, dribbling, defense and team play. There will be daily drills and games.

    The camps will also feature appearances by guest coaches from throughout the Bay Area.

    The cost is $95 for each session for $180 for both sessions in the 7-12 age group and $65 in the 13-15 age division. Each camper receives a T-shirt, and there will be individual competition, gifts and prizes on the final day of each camp.

    Wrestling camps

    The 13th annual Camp for Kids hosted by the Wildcat Wrestling Club will return to Los Gatos High School for three sessions this summer.

    Sessions will be conducted June 17--21 for beginners to intermediate wrestlers ages 7--12 (no experience or one year of camp experience); June 24-28 for intermediates in grades 6-9 (one or two years of junior high experience); and July 1-5 for advanced wrestlers in grades 8-12 (minimum two years of junior high or one year of high school experience).

    Camps run daily 1:30-4:30 p.m. in the high school wrestling room, and the cost is $110 per week ($210 for a two-week registration).

    Veteran Los Gatos wrestling coach Scott Downs is the camp director, and former Los Gatos High School varsity coach Jeff Garlick is the head instructor. Toby Corey, the Fisher and C.T. English coach, will also serve on the staff with other current and former Los Gatos coaching assistants.

    Field hockey camp

    Del Mar will host a beginning field hockey camp for girls in the sixth through ninth grades June 25-27, 9 a.m. to noon each day. The cost is $40 per player and includes a camp T-shirt.     Rowing camps

    The Los Gatos Rowing Club will host a series of rowing camps this summer for those boys and girls entering seventh, eighth and ninth grades.

    Participants will take part in land training techniques and in daily practice sessions in boats on the waters of the Lexington Reservoir. Sessions are scheduled for June 24-28, July 8-12, July 22-26 and Aug. 5-9, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. each day. The cost is $250 per session, and includes lunch and a camp T-shirt.

    Girls soccer camp

    A soccer camp for girls only will be held this summer at Presentation High School. Sessions are slated for June 17-21 and June 24-28, 9 a.m. to noon each day. The cost per session is $125.

    Soccer coaches Mani Hernandez and Andrew Ransome will head up the staff for the camp that will cover: technique training--ball control, footwork, small games; tactical training--possession, support, shooting; and weight training--speed workout, upper and lower body, agility.
