Saratogan John Lundell awarded NASA medal
John Lundell of Saratoga was awarded a NASA medal for exceptional engineering achievement during a May 7 ceremony at NASA Ames Research Center. The medal was awarded for his research work in the late 1970s and early 1980's on the heat shield for the Galileo Entry Probe.
The probe successfully entered the atmosphere of Jupiter last December and, after surviving severe heat entry, a complex payload of instruments made a number of measurements to characterize the atmosphere of the most primordial planet in the solar system. In order to protect instruments from the entry heat, the probe had a heat shield which weighed half the total probe weight of 750 pounds.
Lundell spent the last eight years of his 35-year career with NASA in management and retired in 1990 as associate director of aerophysics. He has lived in Saratoga for 37 years with his wife Coralyn and the couple raised three children here.
