The MathCounts Competition started at a school-wide level in January. From there, winners went on to the statewide competition at UC-Davis. The state winners then spent six weeks training to compete in the National competition. Liu placed first at the national competition against 216 students from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico and a team from overseas armed forces bases.
Liu will return to Washington, D.C., to receive an award for his performance and has an opportunity to attend a summer math camp in Nebraska. Liu will be one of six students to represent the United States in the International Math Olympiad contest. Most of the international team members are in the 12th grade, while Liu is only in the eighth grade. Liu plans to attend Phillips Exeter School in Massachusetts next fall.
