Villa Montalvo hosts paintings, talk by artist

Through July 2, the Gallery at Villa Montalvo is showing Silence Matters, an exhibition of oil-on-canvas paintings by San Francisco artist Eva Bovenzi. Her work is based on imagery from the natural world and includes items such as twigs, pods and blossoms. Among Bovenzi's goals is to focus on the quiet, empty and potent spacing around the images.

To further explore the relationship of empty space and subject matter, visitors are invited to draw their own plant forms on an interactive drawing space and relate them to those drawn by previous visitors.

A reception takes place on June 11, from 3 to 5 p.m. Bovenzi also will give a talk at this time. Regular gallery hours are Wednesday through Sunday, 1 to 4 p.m. For information, call 408.961.5813.

Rec. Department plans a day trip to San Francisco

The Saratoga Recreation Department plans a bus trip to San Francisco's Asian Art Museum on June 29, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The museum's current exhibit is The Golden Age of Chinese Archaeology: Celebrated Discoveries from the People's Republic of China, which contains a broad spectrum of ancient art and artifacts.

The rest of the afternoon is open; participants may visit the nearby DeYoung Museum, Steinhart Aquarium, Botanical Gardens. Lunch and other museum admissions are not included in the trip fee. Call 408.868.1248 or 408.868.1249 for reservations.

Slide program reveals secrets of Trinity Alps

As part of its community lectures and programs, REI Saratoga has invited Diablo Valley College environmental horticulture instructor Stew Winchester to give a slide show on June 6, at 7 p.m.

Although Northern California's Trinity Alps lack the crowds of the Sierras, Winchester says they offer hikers and backpackers an equally varied experience: jagged peaks, secluded lakes, alpine meadows, dense forests and fields of wildflowers. He will discuss the region's geology, natural history and top get-away spots.

The event is free. For information, call 408.871.8765.
