    On Campus

    New Chinese class set to begin at Cultural Center

    The Mandarin Language and Cultural Center will offer a new Chinese class designed for non-Mandarin speaking students ages 5-7. Students will learn daily conversation, listening comprehension and Chinese characters during the 32-class schedule.

    Classes are held on Saturdays from 9:30 to 11:20 a.m beginning Sept. 11 at Saratoga High School and cost $260.

    Argonaut student wins first place

    Argonaut School student Austin Chu recently placed first in the age 10- to-12 category of the Spirit of Mu Lan Essay Contest sponsored by Victory Press.

    Chu wrote an essay based on the book The Legend of Mu Lan telling what he believes Mu Lan demonstrates and gives to society. The 10-year-old won a Legend of Mu Lan gift set consisting of a doll, audio cassette and hardback book.

    Summer Internet classes for teachers

    The Santa Clara County Office of Education this summer will offer teachers instruction on putting the power of the Internet to work in classrooms.

    The Internet institute will offer kindergarten through 12th-grade teachers eight days of instruction along with follow-up sessions during the upcoming school year. Participants will learn to integrate the Internet and the newly adopted California Content Standards into their classrooms.

    Training will take place at 25 separate sites in Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Monterey, San Benito, San Mateo, Santa Clara and Santa Cruz counties.

    Three eight-day sessions will be offered: July 6-15; July 20-29 and August 3-12. Follow-up sessions will be offered in November and February.

    Tom Campbell taking academy applications

    U.S. Rep. Tom Campbell (R-San Jose) has announced that starting this month he will accept applications for nominations to the United States Service Academies: the Air Force Academy, Military Academy and Naval Academy for the Class of 2004.

    Applicants must be between the ages of 17 and 22 by July 1, 2000, a U.S. citizen and a resident of the 15th Congressional District. Applicants also must have completed all California high school requirements or the equivalent by the end of the next academic year (June 2000), with high academic standing.

    Applications will be accepted until November 1. For more information, contact Campbell's district office, 371-7337.

    West Valley offers high school choices

    Students unhappy with the high school social scene have the opportunity to get off campus while completing their required courses, thanks to West Valley College's "Middle College" program.

    Those accepted in the program spend half their school days covering regular high school curriculum at West Valley College and the remainder taking college courses of their choice. For more information, contact Joseph Samuels, 741-2052.
