    Author speaks at library program

Molly Giles, a creative writing professor and prize-winning author, gives a presentation on May 27 at 7:30 p.m. at the Saratoga Community Library, 13650 Saratoga Ave. This is the final program in the library's "Books Alive: A Celebration of Reading" series. Giles, a current artist-in-residence at Villa Montalvo, is the author of two short story collections, Creek Walk and Rough Translations. She is a frequent contributor to the New York Times Book Review and has earned many awards and nominations from publishing and literary organizations.

    Saratoga observes Memorial Day

Saratoga's traditional Memorial Day observance on May 31 begins at 9:30 a.m. at Memorial Arch, next to the firehouse on Saratoga-Los Gatos Road. Following the raising of an American flag and laying of a laurel wreath to commemorate Saratoga's war dead, a program commences at Madronia Cemetery on Oak Street.

The Saratoga High School band, Veterans of Foreign Wars, AmVets, 4-H club members and Girl and Boy Scouts participate in the program, whose theme this year is women veterans and includes a speech by Wilbur Pecka.

Celebrating Memorial Day was begun by ranchers and townspeople who lived near Saratoga Village area in the 1920s. It later became a community event, coordinated by the Saratoga Foothill Club. For information, call 867-9417.

'Regalos y Gracias' are now on display at Montalvo Gallery

Through June 27, the Gallery at Montalvo presents Regalos y Gracias by Elizabeth Gomez and Susan Plum. A native of Mexico, Gomez illustrates stories and imagery of animals and humans that come from the realm of myth and the fantastical. Her work is oil-on-canvas or oil-on-wood.

Plum is a native Texan who lived for an extended period in Mexico City. She contributes a vision that the natural world and cosmos are not separate and that each affects the other. This translates into a shrine-like installation of simple offerings that elicit real or imagined reciprocation. Gallery visitors can participate in an exchange of small gifts--regalos--as part of the exhibition.

The Gallery at Montalvo is at 15400 Montalvo Road.
