Saratogan wins award for athletic excellence

Saratogan Candice Kwok, a member of the class of 1997 at UC-Berkeley, is the recipient of the Anna Espenschade Award. The award was established in 1987 to recognize a graduating senior female student athlete for excellence in athletic endeavors.

Kwok received a gold metal and a certificate during the commencement ceremonies at the Greek Theater on May 13.

Kwok, one of six children of Patrick and Susan Kwok of Saratoga, is a 1993 graduate of Saratoga High school. She won a full scholarship to attend UC-Berkeley after winning the national gymnastics vault championship. As captain of the UC gymnastics team, she led the team to school-record performances on the balance beam, vault, floor exercise and bars. As a freshman, she competed in the NCAA National Women's Gymnastics Competition in Utah in 1994. She ranked among the top 10 vaulters in the nation.

As the Women's Gymnastics Team captain, she was Cal's top performer on the vault and balance beam. She earned Pac-10 All Academic team honors. She is a student athlete mentor, a member of the school Speaker's Bureau and a member of the Captains Council. She will represent Cal at the first NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference in Orlando, Fla., May 27-29.
