Michelle Dawn Welch receives M.D. degree

Michelle Dawn Welch of Saratoga, a 1987 graduate of Saratoga High School, received her M.D. degree from Albany Medical College May 22 in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. She will do her residency in San Antonio, Texas, and she hopes to specialize in cardiology.

She received her B.S. degree in sports medicine and graduated magna cum laude from Pepperdine University in 1991. She was named General Chemistry Student of the Year in 1989 and was on the dean's list all four years. She won a full scholarship to the University of Southern California, where she received a master's degree in biomechanics.

Her husband, Geoffery David Clark, graduated from Pace University School of Law in White Plains, N.Y., on May 23. He holds a bachelor's degree in sports medicine from Pepperdine University. He was captain of the varsity water polo team at Pepperdine and a two-time Olympian in water polo for Australia.

A garden party in honor of Michelle Welch and Geoffery Clark will be given by her parents, Thomas P. Welch and Mary Ann Welch of Saratoga. Geoffery's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Keith Clark from Sydney, Australia, will be the honored guests.

Three local students get C&C scholarships

Two students from Los Gatos High School and one from Westmont High School were awarded $1000 scholarships by Cornish & Carey Real Estate Co.

The recipients of the scholarships had to meet a number of criteria, including academic achievement and extensive community service.

Among the students were Sara Epsztein from Westmont and Adelia Barber and Deva Dawson from Los Gatos.

"We're very pleased that we can recognize these outstanding young men and women and support them as they embark on their colleges careers," said Nina Yamaguchi, who established the program within Cornish & Carey Real Estate nine years ago.

"This program represents a partnership between Cornish & Carey and the communities we serve," Yamaguchi added.

Degree candidates at University of Michigan

John C. Leckrone and Jacqueline K. Payne of Saratoga are degree candidates at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Leckrone will obtain his master's degree in business administration. Payne will be granted her juris doctor degree in law.

Henry Shin receives degree in podiatry

Henry John Shin of Saratoga graduated from the California College of Podiatric Medicine in San Francisco on May 23.

A graduate of Monta Vista High School, Shin graduated from UC-San Diego with a bachelor's degree in physiology. He was on the dean's honors list at podiatry school and will begin his residency at USC Medical Center in Los Angeles on July 1.

Chin earns varsity basketball letter

Jon Chin from Saratoga, a senior at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa., has earned his second varsity letter as a member of the men's basketball team this season.

Chin, a 6-foot, 6-inch forward, appeared in 26 games for the Red Devils this season, starting in five. He averaged 2.3 points and 0.6 rebounds per game. Chin is a graduate of Saratoga High School.

Saratogan elected to Phi Beta Kappa

Aimee Ogden, a senior at Whitman College in Walla, Walla, Wash., has been elected to Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest national honorary fraternity. Ogden, a 1993 graduate of Saratoga High School, is the daughter of Gregory and Lily Ogden of Saratoga. She is majoring in foreign languages and Spanish literature.
