Golf Tournament

It was the "Roaring '20s." The period of the flappers, bathtub gin, the "St. Valentine's Day massacre"--and golf in San Jose.

Because it was in the 1920s when a golf tournament was born in San Jose. And the Santa Clara County County Championship is still going strong today.

In fact, the 71st edition of the tournament, now held in honor of 16-time champion Ernie Pieper, returns to the San Jose Country Club June 7-8.

The scratch tourney features both a championship and seniors championship (50 and over) division.

Casey Boyns, the 1996 NCGA Player of the year, is the defending champion in the championship division, and Clyde Berg is the defending champ in the seniors division.

Pieper won the tournament 16 times. Other past champions include Forrest Fezler, Nathaniel Crosby, Ron Cerrudo, John Lotz, Dick Lotz, and Greg Galasso (a four-time winner).
