Bonvechio is Santa Teresa Division MVP

    By Dick Sparrer

Kyle Bonvechio and the Prospect Panthers dominated baseball play in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League (BVAL) this spring. So it came as little surprise to see Bonvechio and company dominating the all-league team at the season's end.

Bonvechio, a hard-hitting junior shortstop for the Panthers, was named the division's most valuable player after leading his club to the division championship.

The junior won the most coveted spot on the all-league list, and he was joined by seven teammates and his coach as honorees on this year's squad.

Senior outfielder Kevin McPeck was named the division's senior of the year, and junior pitcher Steven Vidal was picked the junior of the year. Prospect manager Carlos Boles was selected as the coach of the year.

Seniors Brent Maselli and J.D. Mazzuca were named to the all-league first team along with junior Aaron Jacks. Winning second-team honors were junior catcher Ted Piggins and junior second sacker Steven Kong.

Westmont's Mike Gorski and Matt Mills won all-league honors in the Mt. Hamilton Division. Gorski, a junior, was tagged to the first team for the Warriors, and Mills, a senior, was a second-team selection.

In girls softball action, Westmont won a couple of awards at opposite ends of the class structure in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the BVAL.

Westmont senior shortstop Jennifer Brown was named the senior of the year in the tough division and freshman hurler Breanna Kuhny was picked the freshman of the year.

Junior first sacker Katherine Bamford and junior catcher Michelle Salmiery were each named to the all-league first team, and sophomore outfielder Danielle Chapman and junior outfielder Victoria Alexander were picked to the second team.

Over in the Santa Teresa Division, sophomore pitcher Cassie Gilford of Prospect won an all-league first-team spot, with sophomore catcher Stephanie Nichols claiming second-team honors.

Prospect's Danny Okasaki was named the freshman of the year in the Mt. Hamilton Division for boys volleyball. The freshman outside hitter was joined on the all-league squad by junior middle blocker Bryan Ronalter, who won first-team honors.

Westmont junior middle blocker Chris McGraw was named to the all-league second team.
