    County parks offer free entry

To celebrate the beginning of park season, the Santa Clara County Parks and Recreation Department is holding its annual "Go Outside and Play Day" on June 9. On that Sunday, vehicle entry fees to all 28 county parks will be waived, including Sanborn Park in Saratoga and Lexington, Vasona and Los Gatos Creek parks, all in Los Gatos.

The 44,000 acres the various parks comprise include areas for hiking, camping, biking, motorcycling, trap- and skeet-shooting, fishing and horseback riding. The department will also have Venture Passes available for $50 each; the pass gives holders unlimited access to all county parks for one year from the date of issue.

For more information, call 408.358.3741 or visit www.parkhere.org.

Paper art classes held at Hakone

As part of the arts and crafts classes Saratoga's Hakone Gardens offers to the community, local artists Mary Beth "Mayo" Parfitt and "Iraida" will hold workshops on tactile paper art on June 10 and 12, from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.

The women will teach participants how to make attractive greeting cards, flowers and other artistic creations using a few simple tools and parchment. Both women are longtime artisans; Parfitt also teaches art at West Valley College.

The cost is $55 for one day or $90 for both. Materials are provided. To sign up, call Iraida at 408.761.1640.

    Auditions set at West Valley

The Theatre Arts Department at West Valley College will hold cold reading-style auditions for its summer production, The Kentucky Cycle (Part One), on June 10 and 11 at 7 p.m. in the campus theater, 14000 Fruitvale Ave. in Saratoga.

The production actually consists of three plays from Robert Schenkkan's The Kentucky Cycle (Part One), in which the life of a family in eastern Kentucky is traced over a period of 100 years of American history. Roles are available for male and female actors from teenagers to senior citizens. The plays do contain some theatricalized violence and mature themes.

Callbacks take place June 12; rehearsals begin June 17. The plays run July 25-28. Call 408.741.2058 for additional information.
