    Retirement, housing prices cause exodus

    By Mary Ann Cook

PEDDLING FOR A CURE: Saratogans Melanie and Joe Warlow raised $1,200 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society earlier this month by peddling their aerodynamic racing cycles for six hours in front of the Argonaut Shopping Center. The bikes were set up on trainers so they functioned as stationary exercise bikes.

The Warlows are in training to participate in an Ironman triathlon in Penticton, British Columbia, Canada, on Aug. 26. The triathlon consists of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride and a 26.2-mile run--all to be completed in less than 17 hours. They are members of Iron Team 2001 of some 60 marathoners.

Ironteam will compete on behalf of several honorees with the diseases. As amazing as it sounds, two of the honorees are in training and will compete in the Ironman event with the team. This is possible, say the Warlows, because of the huge advances in research to find a cure.

The survival rate for the most common form of childhood leukemia has improved from 4 percent in 1960 to 80 percent today. The Ironteam hopes to raise $450,000 for research to find a cure.

The dollars the Warlows earned on that one Saturday afternoon at Argonaut came from kids in their softball uniforms, with a couple of dollars clenched in their fists, to a woman with a generous check whose daughter had died of leukemia 15 years ago.

To support Cycle for a Cure, checks may be sent to Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, 1390 Market St., Ste 1200, San Francisco, CA 94102, Attn: Allie Pendleton. Mention the Warlows if you want them credited.

THE GIANT GET-AWAY: Did last year constitute a major leave-taking from the Village? Seems that way. Saratogans are major travelers, but this time they were pulling up stakes, selling the old homestead and moving out. Why the exodus? House prices at an all-time high was one factor.

And retirement another impetus. Witness these flights: Adrienne and Milt Garfield moved to the Villas in Almaden, to be closer to the littlest grandchildren--and bought a second home in Emerald Bay above Laguna Beach. Two couples moved to Santa Rosa.

One, Katina and Kingsley Chan, moved several years ago, because Kingsley wanted more room for his car collection. And Karen and Peter Lloyd became Santa Rosans more recently. Suzanne and Sam Mitchell, dedicated Montalvo volunteers, have transferred their talents to Ashland, Ore.

Judy and Bill Boehner and Addie and Tom Dusel have moved to Pasadera, a new community between Salinas and Monterey. Meanwhile, Nancy and Jim Crampton moved to Vista, just above San Diego. My LG Rotary liaison Ted Braucht and his wife Joanne moved to Phoenix.

On the other hand, Judi and John Gingerich didn't go far. They took up smaller digs in Los Gatos. But they didn't downsize their ecological choices: they can be at mountains or desert, what with vacation homes at Northstar and Indian Wells.

Are there others who went farther afield you'd like mentioned as being dear and departed? My email is maryanncook@earthlink.net.

GEMINI CRICKETS FUNDRAISER: Gemini Crickets Parents of Multiples celebrated its 30th anniversary with a fundraiser at the Campbell Community Center. Gemini is a support group for expectant, new and existing parents of twins, triplets or more (yikes) in Silicon Valley.

Monthly meetings are held at the Saratoga Community Library, mostly. The current board boasts three Saratogans: Debbie Jensen, president, Evelyn Barrett, secretary; and Camilla Joe, webmaster. Their website is www.geminicrickets.org. Los Gatan Lyn Thompson is new parent liaison for the group.

The fundraiser netted $7,100, surpassing last year's total. The money will be used for speakers and social events for children and parents. Gemini Crickets POM is a member of the Northern California Association and the National Organization of the Mothers of Twins Clubs. The national convention will be held in San Jose in summer 2002.

A TASTE OF COLLEGE & SCIENCE: Local middle-school students, Kathleen Yip, of Redwood School, and Natxielii Ramirez, of Rolling Hills, will get a preview of college life with a generous slice of science, when they attend Tech Trek Science Camp for Girls this summer.

Tech Trek is a program for eighth-graders sponsored by the California chapter of the American Association of University Women. The students will live on the Stanford campus for a week in July and attend classes taught by credentialed middle school teachers, and featuring hands-on experiments.

Women professionals in the fields of science and technology will be guest presenters. Association volunteers will serve as camp directors, nurses and chaperones. Field trips to a Challenger Learning Center, marine biology boats, or a planetarium will be some of the highlights of the week.
