    Saratoga one of 'richest towns'

Worth magazine has deemed Saratoga number 32 in the publication's lineup of the richest towns in the country, according to an article titled "America's 250 Richest Towns," which was published in the June 2000 issue.

Other South Bay Area towns that made the list are Los Gatos at 80, Cupertino at 109 and Sunnyvale at 217.

According to the article, writer Lan N. Nguyen contacted 80 real-estate specialists while researching the article.

    Sasos schedule events for June

They may soon be moving, but Louis and Virginia Saso, longtime proprietors of the Saso Herb Gardens on Fruitvale Avenue in Saratoga, still plan on running some educational events in June.

On June 3, the Sasos will offer a scented garland workshop from 10 a.m. to noon for a fee of $60. The event requires advance registration and will be held in the garden.

On June 17, there is a free lecture and tour of the herb gardens scheduled from 10:30 a.m. until noon. Reservations are not required for this event, and the Sasos will serve herbal tea. Call 408.867.0307.

    Saratogan wins aquarium award

Saratogan Gayle Lavelle won a Lucile S. Packard Memorial Award for outstanding volunteer service at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

Lavelle, who is a full-time mother, has worked 2,455 hours since starting in December 1990. She is a presenter of the "Exploring Monterey Canyon" video program and of feeding shows at the Kelp Forest and sea otter exhibits at the aquarium. She also guides tours for school groups, mentors younger guides and helps with maintenance of the black-footed penguin exhibit.

The mission of the nonprofit aquarium, which has nearly 900 volunteers, is to inspire conservation of the oceans.

    Turn off the AC

Abnormally hot temperatures on May 22, caused California's Independent Systems Operator to announce a Stage 2 energy emergency throughout the state.

Electric customers were asked to turn off all nonessential appliances and raise air conditioning settings to over 80 degrees.
