Controlled burn set for Los Gatos hills

Don't jump up on the roof with a hose when the hills start burning Friday.

The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District and the Santa Clara County Fire Department will be conducting a controlled burn June 4 in the Sierra Azul Open Space Preserve southeast of the town.

Smoke will be visible from around the South Bay and Saratoga.

Officials plan to burn up to nine acres of grassland and sparse chaparral in an inaccessible area on the eastern end of the park, near Hicks Road.

The burn doubles as a training exercise for new firefighters in the County Fire Department, and other new firefighters from some other jurisdictions.

Hirschman talks with SBDC about Mountain Winery

In an eagerly anticipated visit to the Saratoga Business Development Council May 25, Mountain Winery owner Bill Hirschman gave a presentation on the status of the winery and what his hopes and ambitions are for the property.

He said his group, Chateau Masson, has worked tirelessly on the project so far, meeting application deadlines set by the county so it can secure a conditional-use permit to operate.

That process is still moving forward, he said, as semi-public environmental reviews and other public documentation will be forthcoming. He said he hopes to go before the county Planning Commission for public hearings on the matter sometime in July.

On expanding the winery, Hirschman said there are no concrete plans to do so at this point, but that he is considering all possible options. He said that because of the kinds of acts the winery draws, there may be no need to increase the amount of seating in the venue.

The group is seriously considering restoring some of the wine-making operations, however.

He said he's very aware of Saratogans' concerns, and has formed committees with winery neighbors to keep them apprised of what's going on.

Asked if he'd be receptive to Saratoga annexing the property, Hirschman said it was something he'd be willing to look into, but said it would take a lot of work and wouldn't be something that would happen soon.
