    Saratoga spurned by local mayor

Saratoga will remain unaffected by proposed changes in Santa Clara County districting, but Monte Sereno Mayor Barbara Nesbet is grumbling about having to possibly join Saratoga in county District 5.

Under the planned redistricting, Monte Sereno would become the southernmost city in District 5. It currently stretches from Saratoga north, through Los Altos to Palo Alto.

But Nesbet reportedly said her city no longer has anything in common with Saratoga and would prefer to remain in District 1 with southern neighbor Los Gatos.

The county will make a final decision on redrawing district boundaries on August 14.

Input sought on UP rail trail plan

Saratoga and three other cities, collaborating on a plan to put a recreational trail on the Union Pacific rail corridor, will host a public meeting on June 7. The four cities decided in March to fund a feasibility study of the potential trail.

Alta Transportation Consultants, of San Rafael, has begun the feasibility study on the route that would extend along the rail corridor from Los Gatos to Cupertino.

Alta will solicit comments on the trail design and concerns from neighborhoods to be affected by it at the June 7 meeting, at 7 p.m. in the Quinlan Center, 10185 N. Stelling Road in Cupertino.

For more information, call Alta's Project Manager George Hudson at 503.230.9862, or visit the trail link at www.altaplanning.com/spotlight/cupertino/index.html

West Valley transit center now open

Valley Transit Authority held a dedication ceremony on June 1, to open its new transit center on the corner of Fruitvale and Allendale avenues in Saratoga. Bus routes 27, 54, 57 and 58 began using the center on June 2.

There's no change in the schedules for those routes, which run through Los Gatos, San Jose, Santa Clara, Alviso, Cupertino and Sunnyvale.

The new facility has a lighted passenger shelter, benches, bike lockers, newspaper racks and information cabinets.
