    Saratogan teaches at Hakone Gardens

    As part of the various programs it offers the community, Hakone Gardens, at 21000 Big Basin Way, Saratoga, presents a workshop on suminagashi, the Japanese art of paper-marbling, on June 23, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

    The instructor is Saratogan and multimedia artist Yoshiko "Yoju" Deiwert. She will teach participants how to create marbled and patterned papers using the classic Japanese technique of suminagashi.

    Examples of Yoju's work are available at Aegis Gallery, 14531 Big Basin Way in Saratoga, and on her website at artbyoju.com. The fee is $40, plus $5 for supplies. Bring a bag lunch. Call 408.446.4178, or email artbyoju@aol.com.

    Rhythm Makers play at Montalvo

    Montalvo hosts the second annual performance of The Rhythm Makers on June 11, at 7 p.m. at its Carriage House Theatre, 15400 Montalvo Road in Saratoga. The group is an 18-member band of adults with developmental disabilities. The band and its concert is a joint program between Montalvo's Arts Education and Outreach Program and HOPE Rehabilitation Services.

    The band plays in a variety of styles, including marches, pop, salsa, jazz and ballads. Some band members also sing and dance. Professional musicians will accompany The Rhythm Makers.

    Sanborn Park to host a Night Hike

    The Youth Science Institute holds a Night Hike on June 16, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at Sanborn-Skyline County Park in Saratoga. The hike, open to all ages, begins at the YSI's Nature Center, 16055 Sanborn Road. The hike takes participants through the evening woods and teaches them to use their various senses in spotting and identifying nocturnal animals. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult. Cost is $5 per person.

    The nonprofit YSI provides science education classes, hikes and day camps to develop children's understanding of and appreciation for the interrelationship between humans and the natural world. Call 408.867.6940 for reservations.
