Saratoga artist opens studio for showing of new works
Harwood Otis Benton III, a self-taught artist who paints exclusively in watercolors, invites the public to attend a free open studio event he is hosting on June 10, from 1 to 7 p.m. at 13845 Saratoga Ave., Cottage #3, at which time he will introduce his latest collection of artwork.
Although born in Colorado, Benton and his family moved to a small town outside of Rheims, France, when he was a young boy. He credits his first tempting taste of art to his mother, who took him through many museums and galleries throughout post-World War II Europe.
As Benton grew up, among his main interests were drawing and acting; he traversed the United States as a member of a Shakespearean acting troupe and sketched between shows. He soon expanded his skills to include watercolor painting.
Benton's paintings are often based on his travel experiences. Among the master painters whose styles have influenced his own are John Singer Sargent, Sir William Russel Flint and John Waterhouse. Benton's works hang in galleries and private collections throughout the United States.
