Law enforcement agencies throughout Northern California help raise funds for the Special Olympics and participate in the opening ceremonies as the culmination of the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run for the Special Olympics. The runs began in Northern California on May 30, and will continue through June 9, at the opening ceremonies in Stockton. In Santa Clara County, the run began on June 2, in Saratoga at the sheriff's Westside Substation and moved to the front lawn of the Los Gatos Civic Center, where the torch was passed to members of the Los Gatos-Monte Sereno Police Department. Six sheriff's deputies participated, including Deputy Robert Gallardo, a school resource officer. LG-MSPD participants were all members of the SWAT team: Sgt. Kerry Harris, officer Steve Wahl, Detective Leyton Howard, Detective J.R. Langer and Detective Matt Frisby. Above, Estella Frontella from the sheriff's office passes the torch to Detective J. R. Langer. From Los Gatos, runners headed for Campbell, where they passed the torch to the Campbell Police Department. Participants pay $15 for their T-shirts and can sell additional T-shirts to friends. Funds from T-shirt sales support the Special Olympics.
